How to Keep Earbuds In

While the new AirPods are the talk of the town and top of holiday lists, their older cousin, those good old fashion wired earbuds are making a comeback! That’s right, celebrities from Bella Hadid to Lily-Rose Depp and Zoë Kravitz among others, are making a point of walking down Rodeo Drive or Madison avenue sporting their wired companions. And their followers are watching and catching on to the trend. What is causing this retro craze and is it properly justified?

Loss. Tired of dropping and losing those expensive wireless earbuds when going for their morning run or simply shopping around, celebs are taking a stand and figuring out the secret of how to keep earbuds in, right? Wrong! Even wired earbuds can just as easily fall out of your ear. If you’re lucky, the other one will keep it hanging. If you’re unlucky, they’ll get hooked on something and jolt your head back. Incidentally, Setex makes earbud grips for earbuds precisely for this reason. And the celebs may be glad to hear they come in three fashionable colors: black, red and blue.

Privacy. Surely these ladies get stopped by fans and followers, if nothing else outside LA and New York. Wired earbuds send a message of being busy, somewhere else, as a flashing “do not disturb” sign. But before you run out and wire yourself back up, are passerbys on the street regularly approaching you that often? Are we all that popular? By definition, we can’t be, because if we all were, then nobody would.

Cost. OK, we got it. At $179, the new iPods make for quite a pricey stocking stuffer. You can buy a decent pair of wired earbuds for about 10% of that. Losing those won’t hurt remotely as much as the wireless type, especially if you go for the Pros.

Uncool. AirPods have become soooooo popular, that the coolest kids on the block consider them just a tad too mainstream and therefore kind of uncool. If everyone has them, how does that make you different. Well, you could say the same thing about the AirPods’ boss - the iPhone. It doesn’t look like the cool kids are jumping onto Galaxys or Pixels en masse. So we don’t see this holding water for long.

Whether you’re looking to save money or figuring out how to keep earbuds in, the trend is real. The question is, are the motivations strong enough to make a long term dent on wireless earbud sales? We think not. Wireless wearables are poised to continue to grow across numerous product categories where the benefits largely outweigh the inconveniences. Just make sure to keep a strong grip on them.
