The Eyewear Industry’s Embrace of Blue Light Glasses

The Eyewear Industry’s Embrace of Blue Light Glasses

The need for eye protection from the blue light from  computers and mobile devices has resulted in an increased demand for blue light glasses (also called blue light blocking glasses). People who spend a significant amount of time working on devices are increasingly concerned for their eye health. Blue light can cause headaches and lack of sleep because the light emitted from the screen signals to your brain to wake up rather than wind down.

We all spend a lot of time staring at our phone and computer screens. According to Reid Health, on average, adults spend at least 11 hours looking at a device each day, and during the pandemic, the average was 16 hours. Exposure to high-energy blue light for a long time can be harmful to your eye health by causing problems linked to blurry vision, eyestrain, dry eyes, and even cataracts and macular degeneration. This is why doctors recommend that you turn off your cell phone three hours before bedtime.

What is blue light?

Electromagnetic energy travels in waves around us and even through us and has a broad spectrum, from long radio waves to short gamma rays. The shorter the wavelength, the higher the energy transmitted, and blue light has very short waves. Blue light makes up one-third of the light we see daily. Some other sources of blue light include LED lights, fluorescent lights, and sunlight. Of course, staring at the sun and staring at your phone are two different things. Staring at the sun hurts and blue light from devices is less painful, but over time, blue light exposure from your device adds up.

What are blue light glasses?

Blue light glasses were introduced to the eyewear industry in the 1960s and have grown popular since the early 2000s. Blue light glasses have lenses that are specifically designed to block and filter out blue light and reduce eye damage. Studies from the National Library of Medicine have shown that blue light glasses can improve sleep quality, reduce eye fatigue, improve visual performance, and protect macular health.

Eyewear brands like Warby Parker, Cyxus, Felix Fray, and many others have prioritized creating glasses that address the concerns of protection from blue light. These brands offer a large selection of stylish blue light-blocking glasses and computer glasses, and there is no need for a prescription to get them. These brands have carefully designed glasses that are protective, durable, and unique to their brand.

The majority of Warby Parker glasses already have anti-reflection protection, which blocks out 100% of UV rays. An anti-reflection or anti-glare coating invites light through while reducing light reflection on lenses. Warby Parker developed their blue blocker glasses to filter even more blue light than the standard high-index options they provide. Warby Parker also offers the option to add blue light blocking to everyday optical glasses.

Cyxus recognizes the need for glasses that provide protection from high-energy visible blue light and UltraViolet Radiation (UV 400). UltraViolet radiation is used for many tasks in the medical and beauty industries. UV 400 is found in tanning beds and lights used to kill bacteria. Cyxus blue light glasses provide great protection from the high energy transmitted from devices and the sun. Their anti-harmful blue blocker  glasses are anti-glare, shock resistant, and waterproof. Felix Gray’s blue light glasses block up to 50% of all emitted light and 90% of blue light. They also claim that their glasses are 15 times better than other brands. For their current customers, they offer blue prescription glasses. Many parents worry about health risks concerning children who use their devices regularly for school work or leisure. To confront this fear, Felix Gray children’s blue light glasses are also available.
