The Rise of Twitch

The Rise of Twitch

Every other decade, Hollywood’s entertainment methods are challenged with new trends and demands from upcoming generations. For the past three decades, streaming services have been the king of entertainment. Before the likes of Netflix, Hulu, and Disney entered the conversation, there was YouTube.

Younger generations have always been more drawn to realistic content when looking for entertainment. Reality shows and YouTube became extremely popular in the 2000s. People just want content that is relatable, engaging, and fast.

Justin.tv was launched by Justin Kan, Emmett Shear, Michael Seibel and Kyle Vogt in San Francisco, California in 2007. They wanted to create a website that allowed "lifecasting," or live streaming, 24/7. The creators of Justin.tv’s overall goal was to create a network of reality TV shows.

Justin.tv experienced major success and noticed the growing momentum of streamers playing video games online. In 2011, they further developed their gaming platform, calling it Twitch. "What if we just focused on growing gaming?" Emmett Shear stated in an interview for the GoodBye Justin.tv video. "This is great content. I want to grow that part of the site... and it just started taking off and deserves its own place to live."

Live streaming video games has become one of the most popular forms of entertainment over the past decade and Twitch quickly became the go-to streaming platform.

Twitch allows streamers to film themselves while at the same time providing the viewpoint of live video play through screen recording. Viewers can subscribe to their favorite streamers and interact through a live chat. It is unique from YouTube and other video platforms in the sense that there’s no editing involved. Everything is live and real.

In 2013, Forbes called Twitch the "ESPN of video games", drawing in millions of viewers of professional video gamers and live tournaments. Only a year later, Amazon acquired it, giving the platform an incredible boost. As it continues to grow, it is even beginning to mirror the trends from Justin.tv and quickly evolving into other categories such as lifestyle casting, cooking, music, art and more.

Now, the platform’s streamers have the opportunity to become mega-influencers. Some of the most viewed streamers have received 359 million views and the top 100 streamers make at least $30,000 a month.
